Writing Your Legislature


So, you think there’s something here worth writing your representative about.

First you’ll need to know who to write. You can find your state and national officials by going [HERE ], you’ll need to input your address.

Another site I use quite often is: [ for national officials] they’ll want your zip code. For state officials they too will need your address.

When sending your correspondence to a state official you can use the Capital address. However when corresponding with your national officials we recommend fax, email or using their local office. Due to security concerns mail going to Capital Hill in DC is greatly delayed. When using a local office please make note that your correspondence is time sensitive and you’d like the local staff to inform the official of your views as expediently as possible.

How to write your official.

  1. Always include your name and address. This lets them know if you’re a constituent or not. Yes, it’s important.
  2. Be polite and respectful. These are people too and they’re trying to do a good job.
  3. Be concise and to the point. In other words keep it short and simple.
  4. If you want a reply ask for it, you don’t get what you don’t ask for.
  5. The Honorific. At the state level you can use either Senator or Representative. Rarely are state representatives referred to as Congressman. This title seems exclusive to national Representatives.
For a national official you can use Representative or Congressman/ woman and of course Senator. Thus your letter could begin; Dear Senator or Dear Congressman.
